Overview
This course should introduce you to basic concepts from calculus, with focus on differentiation, integration, and applications of these in life sciences.
Topics covered in this course include the following: limits, continuity, rates of change, differentiation, curve sketching, related rates, integration, volume and average value, improper integrals, and differential equations.
Homework
Homework problems will be given on a daily basis and will be due in class every Tuesday and Friday unless stated otherwise. There will be no partial credit given but you will have a week to rewrite and resubmit the problems you missed an unlimited amount of times.
You are encouraged to work together on homework but the final product needs to be your own work. If you work with other students, please indicate this on your homework.
Quizzes
Approximately each Monday, you will receive a quiz unless stated otherwise. Quizzes will test you on the material that was covered the previous week.
Exams
There will be three written exams given throughout this course: two midterms and a final. Exams will be closed book and without calculators. The final exam will be cumulative. The dates for these exams can be found here.
Review sheets containing practice problems will be given out to help students prepare before each exam. Students should understand the concepts covered on the review sheet, not memorize problems. Understanding is key in receiving a good grade.
Late Work
Late homework, make up quizzes, and make up exams will only be accepted/given in the case of a legitimate absence with proper documentation (such as a doctor's note) that must be approved by the instructor. Late work must be made up within a week of the student's return to class.
Grading
30% Homework
10% Quizzes
15% Midterm 1
15% Midterm 2
30% Final
Grades will be assigned based on the standard 10% grading scale. Cutoffs may be lowered if needed. The lowest quiz and assignment will be dropped.
Academic Integrity
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Work that you turn in should be entirely your own. If it appears that you have copied someone else’s work, you will receive a score of 0 for that particular assignment, quiz, or exam.
